Fixed-Pitch Propeller

Ground adjustable propellers, a member of the fixed-pitch family, can be adjusted on the ground only. Propeller systems from this category are commonly seen on small, low-power aircraft that fly at consistently similar speeds, range, and altitude. This type of propeller might integrate a gearbox, hub, bolts, shaft, cap, etc.

Variable Pitch Propeller
This type of propeller system enables a pilot to adjust blade pitch while the propeller is in operation; accordingly, this propeller can maintain a specified engine rpm set by the pilot. A variable pitch propeller is categorized by its available pitch positions - most are two position propellers. This system includes the following parts: spinner, gearbox, propeller shaft, hub, blade assembly, etc.

Constant-Speed Propeller
A constant speed propeller allows a pilot to delegate specific engine speed (RPM) during all stages of the flight cycle. It is powered by a propeller governor, which controls RPM by shifting pressurized oil to and from the propeller shaft - where a piston is connected to the blades. An automated governor will adjust the angle and position of the propeller blades during flight to maintain “on” speed without the pilot having to manually adjust the pitch. Constant speed governor systems include a speeder spring, flyweights, a pilot valve, a gear driven pump, control valve, head tank, fine pitch tube, coarse pitch tube, and others.
